Abide in Christ

TOGETHER.

Solving the Abiding Gaps in Women’s Discipleship

The Abiding Gap

“ I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing.” -John 15:5

Many women’s ministries are rich in biblical teaching (We love that!), but offer little guidance on how to abide in Christ and walk in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who produces spiritual fruit in our lives. He does this by being with us. He helps us become, not just by increasing our biblical knowledge of God, but by showing it to us through daily experience.

Current discipleship trends rightly focus on Scripture, but rarely teach us the conversational, prayerful life with God. Abiding is about being with someone. As we enjoy the love of the Trinity, we learn to hear and obey His voice.

The Relational Gap

“ Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am with them.”

-Matthew 18:20

There is divine authority when we are together. Jesus promised His presence when believers gather, instituted a meal of remembrance, and expected His people to be in one accord, as He and His Father are. Yet many small groups consider their primary function to be education. They focus on lesson discussions rather than on organic conversations about their life with God. When we focus on knowledge, we can lose the skills of sharing honestly, listening well, and noticing God’s handiwork in each other’s lives. While we never want to ignore bible study, we also do not want to neglect the relational design of our discipleship.

The Unity Gap

“My prayer is … that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”- John 17:20-21

Christ prayed that His followers would live in unity, yet ministry environments can encourage a task-or problem-solving mindset. The Bible becomes a glorified self-help book instead of the love story it was meant to be. When personal growth eclipses noticing the glory of God around you, a lack of unity festers. Differences in gifts, skills, and approaches can lead to friction. A focus on knowledge can lead to division. Agendas collide. Differences divide. Yet, this is not the desire of Christ.

Growth comes naturally as we experience God and enjoy each other. True unity grows when women approach one another with love, presence, and mutual support. Trust grows with those who enjoy being with us! Together, we softly hold our ideas, making room for others, as Christ made room for us. We serve one another both practically and emotionally, seeing each other as beloved family rather than projects or problems to solve.
